Suggested Cambodian Itinerary
Day 1 - 3 Arrive Phnom Penh and spend time visiting this fascinating French colonial city, the capital of Cambodia.
Here you can visit the Silver pagoda, a beautiful palace and temple complex in the heart of the city. Visit the notorious S21 prison where the Khmer Rouge transformed a school into a prison and place of torture. Take in the horrors of the Khmer Rouge at the Killing Fields just out of the city where tens of thousands of Cambodians where executed and dumped in mass graves. Shop until you drop in the numerous markets offering a variety of cheap goods and souvenirs. Alternatively take in the mighty Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers as they meet and have a few cold drinks down by the river.
Day 4 - 6 Travel to Sihanoukville on the southern coast of Cambodia, near the Vietnamese border.
Beautiful beaches and uninhabited islands dot the coast. Several national parks are only a short trip away and even do some SCUBA diving if you wish. Experience some of the freshest and cheapest seafood in the world.
Day 7 Return to Phnom Penh.
Do some last minute shopping, take in things you may have missed or just spend a lazy day relaxing.
Day 8 - 9 Travel to Battambang, second largest city in Cambodia and home to some of the best preserved French Colonial buildings in the country.
Experience the 'real' Cambodia. An under developed site for tourists where you really experience Khmer culture and lifestyle. Many seldom seen
'Angkor' era temples dot the area as well as some gruesome reminders of the Khmer Rouge. Visit local farms, meet some of the most wonderful local people and children. Ride the bamboo train, something soon to disappear as the rail line gets upgraded.
Day 10 Travel to Siem Reap by boat.
Almost a full day by boat but you can see the beautiful wetlands national park, home to many rare species. See the huge Tonle Sap Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world and visit a
'floating village'.
Day 11-14 In Siem Reap. Gateway to the Angkor temples.
Not just Angkor Wat but an unbelievable series of temples, palaces, man made moats and lakes that make up the ancient capital of Khmer Culture. Spanning periods of history from 900 AD to 1600 AD these monuments are absolutely breathtaking. No words I can use will convey the majesty of these places. Get yourself a three day pass and take your time exploring these world famous sites. Siem Reap itself is a laid back town full of fine restaurants and good bars.
We then fly out from Siem Reap and return home.
